About:
DICAG is a cross disability non-racial national organisation that was
formed by parents of disabled children in 1993 for the purpose of
addressing the needs of disabled children in South Africa. Its services are
focussed on children in difficult situations as a result of racial oppression,
environmental location, and/or severity of disability. The organisation has
mobilised over 12 000 parents of disabled children, of whom 3900 are
registered members. There are 86 affiliated local parent branches, with
representation from all nine provinces.
DICAG’s vision is to continue to be an organisation of parents that
advocates for the rights of children with disabilities and their full
integration into society with equal opportunities for all.
DICAG has two key programmes:
Advocacy Programme which ensures that all agencies, including relent
government departments, NGO’s and human right bodies, continue to
formulate and implement disability and child friendly policies.
Development Programme which aims to empower parents of children with
disability with knowledge and life skills to be able to respond to their
children’s rights and needs and empower children with disability to be selfadvocates
on their own issues.
