About:
The CMI Dental Clinic, formerly known as the TMI Dental Clinic, was
established at the inception of the Transvaal Memorial Hospital. It served
the needs of inpatient children. It also provided a fully-fledged operating
facility that was used in the management of very young patients and in
children presenting with challenges such as autism and Down Syndrome.
Now the Dental Clinic only treats outpatients and remains a state-funded
institution within the Department of Health.
The Dental Clinic sees to the dental needs of children based in
Johannesburg, including the inner city, Hillbrow, Berea, Yeoville, Bez Valley,
Jeppe, Newtown and surrounding areas. It is the only provincial (state)
children’s dental clinic in the area and treats an average of 500 to 600
children a month, ranging from babies to children up to the age of 12 years
old. Children who were patients of the CMI Dental Clinic prior to 2018 are
seen up until they are 18 years old. The Dental Clinic also has an outreach
program where children attending local schools are screened annually. It
also screens children from a large number of orphanages in the area.
The Dental Clinic no longer has an operating facility at CMI. A large
percentage of the patients are less than 4 years of age and are managed with
the aid of local anaesthesia. The aim is to have a fully-fledged paediatric
dental unit with theatre and sedation facilities to render a fully
comprehensive paediatric dental service in accordance with current best
practice.
